From simple tricks like adding a drying rack to creating a folding station, we’ll give the laundry room a little springtime TLC!

Effective (Not Expensive) Ways to Clean and Organize Your Laundry Room

Laundry room makeovers don’t have to break the bank to be effective. Our laundry room hacks include simple, cost-effective ways to bring form and function to this neglected space. But before any organizing can begin, let’s review some laundry room cleaning tips to banish lint and dust.

#1 – Laundry Room Cleaning Tips

Our tips to clean and organize your laundry room start with a thorough cleaning to remove dust and spruce up your machines:

Cleaning the Dryer

  1. Unplug the dryer.
  2. Move it forward to disconnect the vent.
  3. Move the dryer further forward or to the side to access where it usually rests.
  4. Clean the floor behind the dryer with a broom and dustpan, using soap and water for spills. Allow the floor to dry completely.
  5. Reconnect dryer vent and plug back in. Slide dryer back into place.

Cleaning the Washer

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Use the water shut off valves to turn off water supply.
  3. Disconnect water hoses from valves, placing them inside your washer to prevent spillage.
  4. Slide the washer forward until you can access its usual resting place.
  5. Clean with a broom and dustpan or soap and water, as needed.
  6. Reconnect drain hoses to valves and plug washer back in.
  7. Push washer back into place
  8. Clean your washing machine tub and gasket to decrease mold and odor.

#2 – Add Adjustable Shelving

Stacked from floor to ceiling or over your washer and dryer, adjustable shelves are one of those universal laundry room design ideas. Whether you have a laundry closet or a well-lit room, shelves can help keep supplies handy but away from your workspace. A variety of materials are also available for easy installation and low cost.

#3 – Store Items Using Bins or Hampers

Bins and hampers are great laundry room storage ideas that also add visual appeal. Identical bins on a shelf not only store soaps and detergents but also add a splash of color or texture. Attractive hampers can also serve a dual purpose by organizing laundry and contributing style.

#4 – Use a Hideaway Laundry Cart

Make use of the gap between your washer and dryer by installing a slim rolling cart that fits between the two machines. This tip can clean and organize your laundry room by hiding away bleach, buckets or other items that aren’t regularly used but still need to be in reach.

#5 – Create a Folding Station

Laundry room design ideas for DIYers can include a folding station if you have a front-loading washer and dryer. Some plywood, finishing nails and wood glue can provide you with an area to fold clothes while making use of the overlooked space above your washer and dryer.

#6 – Add a Laundry Drying Rack

Instead of draping wet items over your machines or the laundry room door, consider adding a drying rack to your laundry space. Whether you keep a collapsible rack handy or install a hanging bar or pullout, you can save space and dry clothes more efficiently.

#7 – Hang Items Using a Pegboard

Laundry room organization ideas for hard-to-store items aren’t easy to find, but a good, old-fashioned pegboard can do the trick. From a broom to a basket of clothespins, a pegboard keeps oddly shaped items accessible but out of the way.
