Dive Into the Richness of Slow Cooker Jambalaya

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of making this delightful dish, let’s take a moment to appreciate its origins and components.

What Is Jambalaya?

Jambalaya, at its core, is a hearty, flavorful, and versatile dish that hails from the heart of Louisiana. This culinary staple embodies the rich cultural tapestry of the region, blending West African, French, Spanish, and Native American influences.

Traditionally, jambalaya is a one-pot wonder combining rice, a variety of meats such as chicken, sausage, and sometimes seafood, all simmered together with vegetables and a robust mix of spices. It’s the kind of dish that tells a story with every bite, inviting you to explore the depth of its flavors and the history of its creation.

What Goes Well With Jambalaya?

Jambalaya is a symphony of flavors that can stand proudly on its own. However, its taste can be further enhanced when paired with the right accompaniments. A simple green salad dressed in a light vinaigrette can offer a refreshing contrast to the dish’s richness.

For a heartier companion, consider serving cornbread on the side to soak up the delicious sauce. When it comes to beverages, a crisp, cold beer or a glass of a bold red wine such as Zinfandel can complement the spicy notes of the jambalaya beautifully.

Slow Cooker Jambalaya Recipe

Ready to let your slow cooker do the heavy lifting? This slow cooker jambalaya recipe is a breeze to prepare, leaving you more time to enjoy with family and friends.

  • 2 chicken breasts, skinless, cut into chunks
  • 1 lb. Andouille sausage links, sliced and browned
  • 1 can (28 oz.) diced tomatoes
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 1 lb. raw shrimp (13-15 count)

  1. Combine all ingredients except the rice and shrimp in the slow cooker, stirring well to mix.
  2. Cook on LOW for 7-8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours. Stir in the uncooked rice 1 hour before the cooking time is up.
  3. Add the shrimp during the last 15 minutes of cooking, allowing them to cook through and infuse the dish with their delicate flavor.

Note: Browning the Andouille sausage before adding it to the slow cooker is crucial for locking in its smoky flavor. As for the rice, feel free to cook it separately and serve the jambalaya over it if you prefer a different texture.
